Round files are used for enlarging holes and corners rounding. The file tapers and can be used for a filing a variety of hole sizes
Bastard cut files are the coarsest files and have the fewest teeth per inch. They are used for heavy stock removal.
Single cut files consist of one set of parallel, diagonal teeth extended across the face of the file. They are used for sharpening or to produce a smooth finish.
A tang is the tapered end of the file that can either be used to hold the file or inserted it into an optional handle.
